Cost guide: in-house SDRs

How much does an SDR cost in 2026?

The salary on the job ad is the smallest part of the surprise. This page builds the full cost of one in-house sales development rep from two public sources, shows the arithmetic, and then sets it next to what an outsourced seat costs.

The short answer

The Bridge Group's 2025 survey puts median SDR on-target earnings at $80,000. US private employers spend 70.0% of compensation on wages and 30.0% on benefits, so at full target pay one SDR costs an estimated $114,000 a year in compensation alone. Tools, data, management time, recruiting and a ramp of about 3.0 months come on top. A full year of one Alba seat on quarterly prepay is $25,572 with the dialer and data included; the rest of this page shows where the gap comes from and when each option wins.

Start with on-target earnings, not base salary

On-target earnings (OTE) is base pay plus the variable pay a rep earns at 100% of quota. It is the honest starting point because it is what you have agreed to pay if the hire works. The Bridge Group's 2025 SDR report, a survey of 351 B2B companies, puts the median at $80,000, or roughly $6,667 a month.

Two cautions. The survey is mostly North American B2B software companies, so a rep in another industry or city may cost more or less. And the same report found 60% of reps at quota, so in practice many reps earn less than OTE, while your best ones earn more.

From OTE to what the employer actually pays

Pay is not the whole bill. In June 2026 the Bureau of Labor Statistics measured that wages and salaries were 70.0% of total employer compensation costs in US private industry, and benefits the other 30.0%: health insurance, paid leave, retirement and legally required costs such as payroll taxes.

Applying that national split to an SDR is an estimate, not a measurement: the BLS figure covers all private-industry workers, not SDRs specifically. With that caveat, an SDR paid the full $80,000 costs about $114,000 a year, of which about $34,000 is benefits and employer taxes.

Ramp and tenure: the cost nobody budgets

The Bridge Group reports an average ramp of 3.0 months and an average tenure of 1.9 years. Put those together and roughly 13% of a typical SDR's time with you is spent getting up to speed, paid at full rate.

Then the seat empties and the cycle restarts: a new search, a new ramp, and the pipeline gap in between. When you model a hire, model the replacement too. Our calculator lets you enter your own ramp and recruiting assumptions instead of ours.

What the compensation number still leaves out

None of these have a reliable public benchmark, so we do not invent one. Price them from your own invoices.

  • Dialer, CRM seats and sales tools.
  • Contact data and list building.
  • The manager's time to hire, coach and review calls.
  • Recruiting: agency fees or the hours your team spends interviewing.
  • Equipment, and office space if the role is not remote.

Set against one outsourced seat

An Alba Growth seat is one managed caller, the dialer and the data for $2,006 a month equivalent on quarterly prepay, or $2,367.08 monthly, plus $1,500 setup. A full year on quarterly prepay is $25,572, with the caller, dialer and data already in it.

The two are not the same product. An in-house SDR works only for you, sits in your meetings and can grow into a closer. An Alba caller works your list from Cairo on US hours, managed by us, and you can add or stop seats without a hiring cycle. The comparison that matters is cost per conversation with your buyers, and only your own numbers can answer that.

When hiring in-house is the better call

Hire when the role needs deep product knowledge from week one, when deals are large and calls are few, or when you are building a sales team you want to promote from. Outsource when you need conversations now, when you want to test a market before committing headcount, or when the calling volume is more than one person can sustain.

Questions buyers ask

What is the average SDR salary in 2026?

The most recent large survey we can cite, the Bridge Group's 2025 report, gives median on-target earnings of $80,000, combining base and variable pay. Base alone is lower; the split varies by company.

How much does an SDR cost per month?

At median OTE with benefits at the national private-industry share, about $9,500 a month ($114,000 a year), before tools, data and management. Treat it as an estimate and replace it with your own payroll numbers.

Is an outsourced SDR cheaper than hiring?

On price per seat, usually yes. On value, it depends on what each produces for your market, which is why we publish our dial data and leave output out of the price comparison.
