The Cairo Ledger
We run our calling out of Cairo.
The same city where, in 1934, a British woman started a charity for its working horses and donkeys. This is the story, and the commitment we are putting in writing.
Where we are
We have not given anything yet.
Printing the zero is the point. Rounding it would not be. It goes here first so the number that replaces it has something to be measured against. Every figure that lands under it will be dated and sourced the same way.
Why Cairo. Why Brooke.
In 1934, a British woman went to Cairo and could not look away.
Her name was Dorothy Brooke. She arrived in Cairo and found horses from the British army's WWI campaigns still being worked in the streets, sold to local owners after the war, ridden until they collapsed.
She raised money in the press, bought as many as she could, and gave them a humane retirement. Then she founded a charity so the work would continue after her. Ninety-two years later it is still running. Brooke is now the largest equine welfare organisation in the world, treating around 160,000 working donkeys and horses every year in Egypt alone.
The company is registered in Delaware and named after Scotland, and it dials out of Cairo. Brooke has been treating that city's working animals since before any of that existed. Supporting the charity is part of how we want to build the company, and this page is where you check whether we did.

What we will not do.
- 01
No founder photos with donkeys. Ever.
- 02
No saccharine captions. The work is the story.
- 03
No mixing the cause with a sales pitch.
- 04
We will never claim we have given more than we actually have.
- 05
When we give, we publish it honestly, the unglamorous parts included.
The usual cause page lists what it does. A photo can fake all of that in an afternoon. A list of things we will not do is one you can catch us breaking, so that is the list.

Brooke's Egypt operations →When we give, the amount, the date and whatever the charity sends back go on this page. Until then it stays this short.
